WELCOME TO SIDEKICK VERSION 1.58
--------------------------------
This README file contains important enhancements that the Owner's
Handbook doesn't cover. Please read this file in its entirety;
we hope it answers any questions you may have.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
-----------------
1. How to Get Help
2. New Features
3. Corrections and Omissions from the Owner's Handbook
4. Questions, Answers and Hints
5. File List
1. HOW TO GET HELP
------------------
Borland does not support this OEM product.
If you need help contact the dealer who supplied this program to you.
2. NEW FEATURES
---------------
1. Command line switches
-------------------------
The following command line switches have been added:
/A Enables SideKick to allocate the Notepad buffer and other
data areas to an expanded memory board, such as the Intel
AboveBoard. SideKick allocates a maximum of 64K (depending
on the Notepad buffer size). SideKick reports the amount of
allocated EMS memory when you load it. See also EMSTEST.COM
below.
/B Tells SideKick not to automatically create .BAK files in the
Notepad (that is, it turns off this feature).
/K Forces SideKick to skip the test for new keyboard ROM. Some
new keyboards have 12 function keys; if your keyboard has
only 10 and you experience keyboard problems or have difficulty
loading SideKick, the /K switch may be a solution.
/T Use this switch if SideKick won't pop up over the 3270
control program (not needed for all versions of the 3270
program). You should use this switch ONLY in this situation,
as you then won't be able to activate SideKick during long
calculations and other situations that don't involve keyboard
activity.
PLEASE NOTE: SideKick, regardless of the /T switch, won't
pop up over old versions of XyWrite or the Leading Edge word
processor.
/U Unloads SideKick. You can unload SideKick from memory with
SK /U
Alternatively, if you are using DOS 3.3 or higher,
you can use the CALL command in a batch file to remove
SideKick from memory. See your DOS manual for information
about batch files and the CALL command.
Remember that SideKick must be the last RAM resident program
loaded.
2. EMSTEST.COM
---------------
This program will test your expanded memory (EMS) for
compatibility with the Lotus/Intel/Microsoft standard. At the
DOS prompt, type EMSTEST and press <Enter>. If this program
reports problems with your EMS board, we don't recommend that
you use the /A switch when loading SideKick.
3. Setup
---------
You save the following items using "Save Window Setup" in the
Setup menu:
a. The position and size of all windows
b. Notepad right margin (set by ^OR)
c. Notepad paste mode (Block or Line) and paste key (set by ^KE)
d. Notepad graphics mode (set by ^QG)
4. Appointment Calendar
------------------------
You can now use international characters and graphic symbols in
appointment entries.
5. Cut and Paste
-----------------
SideKick now supports Ctrl-A, Ctrl-F, Ctrl-Lft, and Ctrl-Rgt
when you import from screen. These shortcuts move the cursor
10 columns to each side.
6. SideKick Over Graphics
--------------------------
SideKick always uses the screen's TEXT MODE. If you have
graphics on the screen when you activate SideKick, the display
turns into scattered blots of strange characters in different
colors, and SideKick appears on top of this. Not to worry.
When you exit SideKick, your graphics will return.
We have added a feature that blanks the graphics screen when
you activate SideKick so you don't have to look at the "modern
art" behind SideKick. SideKick comes preinstalled with this
feature. To uninstall it, run the installation program SKINST
and select "S" for Screen installation. If you have any
questions about how to do this, refer to Appendix B,
Installation, in the Owner's Handbook.
7. Left Margin
---------------
We have added a left margin to the Notepad. SideKick activates
the left margin on the paragraph level rather than the document
level. What this means is that you set a new left margin at
the beginning of the paragraph if your new margin is past the
first column. Otherwise, the default left margin is column one.
To set the left margin in the Notepad, place the cursor in the
column you want as the left margin. Press <Ctrl-P>, then press
<SpaceBar>. If you insert a blank line to designate a new
paragraph, the left margin reverts to column one.
You can see the left margin by pressing <Ctrl-Q> <G>; this
turns graphics mode on. The current position of the left margin
will be marked by ASCII character 160 (á).
8. F2 and F3 consistency
-------------------------
By popular demand, and to be more consistent throughout the
SideKick program, we have changed the function key assignments
in some of the SideKick windows. The affected windows are the
Dialer and the Appointment Calendar.
To bring a new file into the Dialer window, press <F3> (just
like the Notepad). The function keys that invoke searching in
the Dialer have also been changed to accommodate this: <F5>
searches for matching INITials, <F6> searches for all matches,
and <F7> stops a search (instead of <F3>, <F4>, and <F5>,
respectively).
To bring a new Appointment file into the Appointment Calendar,
you now press <F3>. To print appointments, press <F2>.
9. Turning Word Wrap Off
-------------------------
You can disable word wrap in the Notepad by setting the right
margin (<Ctrl-O> <Ctrl-R>) to 250. You can permanently disable
word wrap by running the installation program SKINST, then
typing "M" to set the Right Margin to 250. If you have any
questions about how to do this, refer to Appendix B,
Installation.
10. SideKick with Symphony and Word
------------------------------------
SideKick is now compatible with both of these programs with any
hardware configuration and installation. See the corrections
to page 113 below for details.

SideKick is now compatible with Microsoft Word on any
hardware configuration. You can start WORD with any of the
following commands: WORD, WORD/C, WORD/H, WORD/L, WORD/M.
NOTE: See item 5 under New Features for an explanation of how
SideKick can blank a graphics screen when invoked (instead of
creating modern art).
4. QUESTIONS, ANSWERS AND HINTS
-------------------------------
Q: When I try to save my Setup in the Setup window or try to
access Help, I get an error message.
A: SideKick Help files, as well as SK.COM, must be within
the current "domain" of SideKick for SideKick to find them.
In other words, SideKick looks for these files on the DRIVE
and DIRECTORY from where you issued the command to load
SideKick.
If you are a floppy disk user, you must put the SideKick
disk into one of the drives, LOG onto that drive, and then
issue the "SK" command to load SideKick into memory.
If you are a hard disk user, the current directory must contain
all SideKick files before you load SideKick into memory. For
instance, if you have a subdirectory called \SK, you must issue
the command "CD\SK" to make \SK the current directory, and then
type "SK." If you load SK through a path, SideKick won't find the
Help files.
Q: The characters on my SideKick display are fuzzy. Sometimes
I cannot see everything in the window.
A: Chances are you have a color/graphics adapter with a one-
color composite monitor. If this is the case, you must run
the installation program SKINST and select "S" for screen
installation. The correct monitor to choose is the "B & W"
monitor.
Q: How can I delete some of my Notepad files?
A: To delete Notepad files, exit to DOS and then use the Delete
command.
Q: Why can't I use <F1> to paste a block from the Notepad?
A: The <F1> key is reserved for Help in SideKick. Try using
the <Alt> key in conjunction with another key, e.g., <Alt><P>.
Q: When I'm in the Notepad and I press <Enter>, the cursor goes
to the beginning of the same line instead of to the next line.
A: You are in Overwrite mode. Press <Ctrl-V> to toggle back to
insert mode. For more information about this, refer to page 50
in the Owner's Handbook.
Q: I accidentally programmed the "P" key with a number while in
the Calculator. How do I restore the "P" key?
A: While in the Calculator, hold down the <Alt> key (if you
have SuperKey loaded, hold down both the <Shift> and the
<Alt> keys), and press <8> <0> (for "P"). Then press <C>.
SideKick will clear all programmed numbers.
Q: I accidentally programmed the "C" key with a number while in
the Calculator. Now I can't clear my programmed keys.
A: Press the <P> key to enter the Paste mode. While holding
down the <Alt> key (if you have SuperKey loaded, hold down both
the <Shift> and the <Alt> keys), press <6> <7>. This will
clear your programmed keys.
Q: The Calendar will not accept a month when I try to print.
A: You must enter the number of the month, not the name of the
month.
Q: When I try to bring up the Dialer, I get the message: "No
phone directory."
A: In the Setup window, you must specify the name and location
of the file you want to use for the phone directory. You can
use the Notepad to create your phone directory.
Q: How do I sort my phone directory?
A: To sort your phone directory, bring the file into the Notepad
and use Sort Block. For more information about how to do this,
refer to Page 54 of the Owner's Handbook.
